The Department of Higher Education, Govt. of Chhattisgarh has identified this institution as Lead College of District Durg to mentor and monitor academic and administrative functioning of other govt. and non-govt. colleges in this region.
The college offers UG and PG courses in Science, Arts and Commerce streams. Equipped with 22 teaching departments of which 17 are PG departments, and 104 faculty members, it has 16 departments recognized as research centers, namely Hindi, English, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Commerce, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology, Geology, Microbiology and Biotechnology department. Department of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Geology, Microbiology and Geography research collaborations with national and international institutes of high repute. Many of the departments render paid as well as free consultancy services for sharing their knowledge resources for the benefit of institutions and society. The college houses study center of IGNOU since 1987 with nearly 800 students enrolled per year for management & other programs and Pt. Sundarlal Sharma Open University, Chhattisgarh since 2004, with student enrollment strength of nearly 300 in 34 different courses.
The college has a strong, committed and dedicated teaching faculty, of which 68 are Doctoral Degree holders and 5 M.Phil. Degree holders. The college has 46 non-teaching members and 38 daily wage employees to assist in smooth conduction of administrative and office work. The teaching faculty is actively engaged in research work. A number of co-curricular and extracurricular activities for students are regularly organized throughout the year.
The college has well defined policies for healthy and effective working of various committees and is well communicated to staff and students on several platforms.
Keeping pace with the challenging need of the day the college has undergone major paradigm shift in terms of pedagogical methodology, from conventional ways of teaching to ICT enabled teaching. It has successively established smart classrooms, provided with Wi-Fi connectivity and computerized library to facilitate effective teaching and learning.
The college library is fully automated with RFID facility and well equipped with books, journals, periodicals and reading rooms. The library has web-OPAC for providing remote access to its repositories of textual resources. Along with book bank facility for SC and ST students, library has specially designed furniture for divyang students and books in BRAILLE are also available for the visually challenged students.
Career Counseling and Placement Cell monitors activities related to job notifications and opportunities, Interview preparation, development of entrepreneurial skills, organizing of campus Interviews besides ensuring maximum participation in campus recruitments and interviews. The cell works in coordination with all Head of departments to cater to diverse need of students. It is actively engaged in organizing Inspirational lectures by experts. It aims at guiding students towards cracking Civil Service exams. The Cell also attempts at encouraging students by providing them opportunities to interact with young probation officers, senior civil servants, Defense Officers etc. who have already cracked the exams.
Holistic development that integrally involves Soft Skill Development has been a focal area of the College. A Skill Development Scheme Committee looks into issues pertaining to skill enhancement.
This institution has a sports department that takes initiative to promote sports among students and provide coaching for cricket, kho-kho, volley ball, basketball for both girls and boys team. The Sport officer also focuses on overall improvement of sports person and runs yoga courses. The institution holds high repute in the fields of sports; our students have outshined in power lifting, weight lifting and Judo at both the National and International levels. It has Football ground, Cricket ground, Badminton Court, and other facilities for indoor games.
The Girls and Boys wings of NSS, NCC and Youth Red Cross wings are actively involved in social activities and hold camps regularly in the rural areas, with the mission of spreading literacy hygiene, cleanliness and other current issues. Blood donation camps, Environmental Awareness Campaigns, Covid awareness & Prevention Programs are consistent features of these wings.
The college provides a number of scholarships for SC/ST/OBC/ Sports/Merit students sanctioned by the government.
The college provides a conducive environment for PG students to qualify NET, SLET, GATE, MAT/XAT for admission to Institution of National Importance. Research Scholars of the institute have won State and National level Young scientist awards and other awards of repute.
